Ask any Gen Z’ers if they’ve ever heard of or used TikTok, and chances are almost every one of them will say “Yes!” And it’s expected, given the fact that TikTok’s rise to fame is influenced by individuals between 16 and 24 years of age, which comprise 41 percent of TikTok users (Globalwebindex, 2019).
So, the answer to the question as to who uses TikTok is clear – the prime movers are the teens and those in the early twenties. It’s easy to say that the app has been designed with this age group in mind. And true enough, TikTok has tickled the right spots and hit the nail right on the head when it comes to getting the youngsters hooked with its bells and whistles.
2020 TikTok Statistics
Let’s start it with a bang – TikTok has been downloaded over 2 billion times as of April 2020. And it has over 800 million monthly active users worldwide. With this number of app downloads, we can’t emphasize enough that TikTok surpassed other social network channels and messenger apps like Facebook, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, and Snapchat in the volume of installations from Apple App Store and Google Play Stores.
There’s no denying, TikTok is now one of the leading social networks with an all-time revenue of $247.6 million. And to date, ByteDance, its parent company is reported to have a valuation of more than $100 billion, making it the most valuable start-up worldwide. Total App Downloads
Once again, TikTok has surpassed the 2 billion mark in the number of total downloads. It was even coined as the “most downloaded app” in 2018 and 2019. During the first quarter of 2020, the app had 315 million downloads.
Monthly Active Users
TikTok has about 800 million monthly active users, and 26.5 million of its monthly active users are from the USA. With this number, it surpassed LinkedIn, Reddit, Twitter, Snapchat, and Pinterest in monthly active users. Facebook, on the other hand, which is still the largest social network, is estimated to have 2.6 billion monthly active users as of March 2020.
For the record, LinkedIn has 675 million monthly active users, while Pinterest and Twitter have 367 million and 340 million MAUs, respectively. Reddit, the 6th most visited website worldwide has a monthly active user of 430 million.
Monthly Active Users in the United States
In November 2018, TikTok reported that 20 million of its monthly active users are from the United States. But this data was almost two years old, and with the massive growth that the app has experienced in the past couple of months, it is estimated that by now there are about 70 million monthly active users in the US.
According to TikTok, 60% of their US audiences are between ages 16-24, 26% are between the ages of 25-44, and 80% are between the ages 16-34. And when it comes to the number of downloads, users from the US make up 8.2 percent of the total which is equivalent to 123.8 million downloads.

TikTok started as a short-form video-sharing app, called Douyin in September 2016.
In September 2017, Douyin expanded outside of China under a new name – TikTok.
In November 2017, ByteDance, the parent company of Douyin, bought Musical.ly for $1 billion.
Musical.ly was an app where users can share 15-second lip-syncing music videos.
In August 2018, ByteDance announced that it would shut down Musical.ly and merge it into TikTok. So, all the Musical.ly accounts were moved to TikTok.
TikTok app is available in 154 countries, and 75 languages (Apptrace).
Users spend an average of 52 minutes per day on the app (BusinessofApps, 2019).
The New York Times reports that TikTok’s usage has been increasing since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

According to App Ape Lab, TikTok’s engagement rate, or the percentage of monthly users who open the app every day, is more than 70%.
The app has been downloaded more than 467 million times in India, which is almost one-third of its total downloads.
