The Ultimate Guide on How to Use TikTok

Updated: Sep 21

Gary Vaynerchuk uses TikTok, and besides, he even promotes it in his talks. Gen Zers are all over TikTok. Influencers and celebrities are resorting to this platform to satisfy their agenda – from engagement, brand awareness, lead generation, or even to just have a breather from other social media platforms and enjoy the light and fun vibe of TikTok.

So, why aren't you using TikTok for your business?

What is TikTok?

Before it became TikTok, it was first Musical.ly, a short-form video streaming and sharing app with over 100 million users up until August 2018. When the Chinese company ByteDance took over Musical.ly in August 2018, all its users, accounts, and content were moved to TikTok.

TikTok is essentially a video-sharing social network that allows users to create and share 15-second videos. And unlike Musical.ly, the TikTok app doesn’t only focus on lip-syncing to music. With TikTok, users have more choices and a wider scope to use their creativity in video creation.

Users can use a popular song or choose from tons of sound snippets, filters, and effects to incorporate into their videos. And they can also join trending dance challenges and create their version from the plethora of video ideas that are available on the platform.

Why Use TikTok?

TikTok has breached the 500 million mark. It has over 1 billion users from 154 countries and over 800 million monthly active users as of June 2020. And in the US, TikTok is dominated by teens and young adults at 18-24 years old. However, those in the late twenties to mid-40s are also catching up.

According to Comscore, more millennials are finding their way to the Gen Z-dominated app. If you are concerned that your target audience is not on TikTok, I must say that you’d really be concerned because the truth is they are on TikTok and you are not.

And here’s good news – TikTok just launched TikTok for Business on June 25, 2020, with their tag line, “Don’t make ads. Make TikToks.” Well, that’s definitely a striking copy. You can really tell that they mean business.

You’ve read it right. They’ve just launched this new platform for marketers and business owners last June. So, if you want to get ahead of your competition, you’d better create your TikTok account now and start exploring the newest world of TikTok for Business.

How to Use TikTok?

Now that you’ve created your account, you are ready to create your first Tik Tok video and engage with other users on the platform.

1. Enjoy the videos

As they always say, you won’t really last in a certain endeavor unless you enjoy what you are doing. Well, the same is true with TikTok. You are here not just to market your business, but more than that, you are here to enjoy and interact with other users.

2. Engage with other users

If you’re watching the video of a random user, you will see five icons: the profile icon, the heart or like icon, the conversation bubble, the share button, and the swirling record or music icon.

By scrolling to your left or tapping on the profile icon on the top right corner, you will enter the main page of the publisher/user where you can watch other videos from him. Under the profile icon, you can like the video by tapping the heart icon.

The third icon from the top is the conversation bubble. You can click this if you want to leave a comment on the video that you are watching. If you want to share the video, simply click the share button that is under the conversation bubble.

Finally, the fifth icon is a swirling record with music notes coming out from it. Once you click on this icon, you will see the detailed information about the music that is used in the video. You can also use the same music by tapping the “Use this sound” option at the bottom.

3. Create entertaining videos

If it’s your first time, it’s just normal to have the impression that creating TikTok videos is difficult. But once you are done uploading your first video, you will just keep on going effortlessly. Below are the easy steps in creating a TikTok video:

Step 1: Click the “+” icon and give TikTok permission to access your camera and recorder.

Step 2: Set up the timer, speed, flash, and filters. You can also choose whether to use the front or the back camera. When you are ready, quickly press the red button on your recording screen to start shooting. You can also long-press the red button and release it if you want to divide your video into several clips.

Step 3: Choose a piece of music to bring more life to your video.

Step 4: Once you are done filming, click the red check to proceed to the editing page.

Step 5: In the editing page, you have the option to add filters, adjust your clips, add voice effects, add a voice-over, add sounds, trim the music, and adjust the volume. You can also add texts, visual effects, and stickers. Feel free to explore what you can do.

Step 6: If you are satisfied with your video, click the red “NEXT” button and it will lead you to the final page before posting the video. In this section, you will be asked to describe your video, and you can also select a frame from your video as a cover.

After clicking on the “Post” button your posted video will now be seen by other users. Don’t hesitate to share your newly uploaded video. You can share it through text message, share to your social media accounts, share via WhatsApp, on Twitter, and so on. Get ready to be flooded with likes and comments!

Best TikTok Video Ideas

Although you can simply go to the “Discover” tab to explore the trending videos where you can get ideas for your videos, you can also resort to your creativity and make original videos. To kick start your process, some of the most popular themes are pets, lip sync videos, duets, travel, impromptu videos, videos covering current events, or show off your skills by creating tutorials or educational videos.

No Time For Shame on TikTok

If you want to make the most out of this booming social network, you’ve got to drop your timidity and just let loose. Show your followers your less serious and more humane side. In this digital age, it’s so easy not to be authentic. And we can’t emphasize enough that more than ever, people cringe on fake content – more so with fake personalities.
